Obituary

Betty Morris Duncan (100) was born on September 12, 1924 to Frank and Violet Morris of Long Branch, New Jersey.  Her early years were spent in Asbury Park and Neptune City, New Jersey.  During her teenage years she became a Christian and joined the First Baptist Church of Asbury Park, NJ.  She graduated from Neptune High School in 1942.  After working for two years as a secretary for the US Signal Corps during WWII, she enrolled at Philadelphia School of the Bible (now Cairn University) and graduated in 1947.  Betty worked for a year as church secretary at FBC Asbury Park and then enrolled at Gordon College, MA, graduating in 1951.

In 1952, Betty traveled to Japan by ship for her first term as a missionary with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society (CBFMS, now World Venture).  She went to language school for two years and then began sharing the gospel in Yachi, Honshu and the surrounding towns.  She then moved to Sendai to work in the mission's literature office.  At the end of her first term, she met fellow missionary William Duncan, and they married on December 15, 1957 at CBFMS Headquarters in Wheaton, IL.

Bill and Betty served another two terms in Furukawa, Japan and had four children during that time:  Phillip, Rachel, Paul and Carol.  They were then stationed in Iwanuma, Japan for their last term.  They spent many rewarding and fruitful years (23) in village evangelism and church planting in Japan, making many life-long friends, until William's retirement in 1975.

Back in the USA, the family lived in New Jersey for three years before moving to Phoenix, AZ.  They did substitute teaching in the public schools for many years, and then Betty worked at the Arizona State Land Department as a secretary for four years.  After living in Prescott, AZ and then Camp Verde, AZ, they moved to Boerne, TX (2005) to be near her daughter and family.  After moving to Boerne, William went to be with the Lord on October 16, 2005 and is buried in the Boerne cemetery.

During the last 16 years Betty has been attending Trinity Pres. Church, helping several elderly friends who could no longer drive, playing piano at elderly care centers in Boerne and SA, and enjoying being a grandmother to her grandchildren who lived across the driveway.  She was able to make several trips back to Japan to visit her son and Japanese friends, her last trip being in 2013 at the age of 89.

In March, 2017, Betty moved to Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs into the independent care facility. It was the perfect place to be in her final years, moving in when she was 92 and still very active. She enjoyed being with people and taking advantage of the many activities offered. She enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, knitting, cross stitch, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed visiting those at the rehab and assisted living facility nearby, encouraging them and praying for them. She joined the Menger Singers also and found great joy in singing with the group.

When Betty needed more care, she moved back to her little house on her daughter's property, where she was cared for by many loving family and friends and passed away in her daughter's home on April 28, 2025. Betty loved to serve wherever she went and was known for her heartfelt prayers and her beautiful smile, right up to the end. Betty is survived by her four children: Philip Duncan, Rachel Sanelli, Paul Duncan (Laura), and Carol Rugloski (Rob); her twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
