Obituary

Charlotte Louise Chowen Matthews , 84, peacefully passed away June 22,2022 surrounded by her loving family.  She was born January 7, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Joseph and Charlotte Chowen.  She was the oldest of 13 children, and was fondly known as "Charley" within her family

Charlotte and her husband Steve retired from 22 years of military service and moved to Johnson City in February 1978.  Together, they owned and operated the Hill Country Cupboard for 19 years and Home Ranch Realty for another 12 years.  Among her many official titles, Charlotte was a restaurant, gift shop and bakery owner, a loan officer and real estate agent.  She was very active in the community and held many positions within the Baptist Church.  She was an active member of the Johnson City Women's Club, the Tuesday Ladies Lunch Group and two quilt guilds.  She had a passion for the Lord, a love for her family and was a faithful friend.

Charlotte is survived by her children, Victoria Bacon and husband Ron, Steve Matthews, Jr., and Chris Matthews and wife Jennifer; siblings, Lew, Joan, Mike, Danny, Mark, Matt, Kathy, Joe, Jack and Terry and their spouses; grandchildren, Jake Bacon and wife Carley, Mike Bacon and wife Angie, and Jim Bacon; great grandchildren, Jennifer Bacon, Justin Bacon, Zach Bacon, Sam Bacon; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charlotte is predeceased by her husband Stephen Matthews, Sr.; her parents, Joseph, and Charlotte Chowen; sisters Mary and Caroline, and her grandson Matthew Bacon.

A memorial service honoring and celebrating Charlotte's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday July 6, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Johnson City, 102 N. Ave F, Johnson City, Texas 78636.
