Cloma Mae
Brewer
Sep 15, 1927 — Mar 21, 2023
Fredericksburg
Cloma Mae Brewer of Fredericksburg, TX passed away peacefully with family at her side March 21, 2023 in Fredericksburg. Cloma was born September 15, 1927 in Santa Ana, CA to Marshall James Chisum and Bertie Mae (Miears) Chisum.
Cloma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James D. "Jim" Brewer; brother, Jonathan James Chisum; daughter in law, Kathleen Brewer; and son in law, Don Wurch. She is survived by her five children, Duane Brewer and friend Ruby Stover, Aleta Davis and husband Donald, Kay Lange and husband Leon, Dorla Ortega and husband Manuel, and Becky Wurch; foster-daughter, Marquita Battiest Jackson; special friend Lou Ann Holland; six grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many other loving relatives and a host of dear friends.
Cloma grew up on the Morse Ranch in Texas where she attended her elementary years at a one room school. Her family moved to Medina and at the age of eleven she began picking up neighboring children in her Daddy's car and drove them to school. This was a foreshadowing of her future where she drove a school bus for Johnson City ISD and maintained the Round Mountain route for many years. While in Medina, Cloma was chosen as 'class favorite' girl each year and was also chosen Homecoming Queen her Junior year of high school. Her parents moved the family back to California that summer.
Shortly after moving to California, she met and married Jim on January 4, 1946 at the age of 18. They raised their 3 older kids in San Diego where she rode the Nickel Snatcher ferry across the bay to Coronado/North Island where she cooked and managed the Snack Bar at the Naval Air Station. Cloma eventually attended her senior year at Midway Adult School and obtained her high school diploma the same year her son graduated from high school.
Jim and Cloma moved the family to Imperial Valley where they took in various foster children and adopted their last 2 daughters. Cloma worked nights at the local hospital in the nursery as a newborn Nurse's Aide. Jim and Cloma moved to Johnson City, Texas in 1974 where she worked and managed the school cafeteria for numerous years. Many families in Johnson City still cook with the recipes she shared with them. She also enjoyed crocheting and painting oil paintings. Cloma was a very skilled seamstress, sewing clothes and making quilts for family and friends. You will see several of these quilts on display across the back of the pews at her funeral service.
Cloma's love language was keeping a clean house and cooking for others. Her pride and joy were her children, and she considered her brother James' children as her own. She had a remarkable way of making each one feel special and if you ask any of her grandkids, they'll tell you they were her favorite.
Jim and Cloma married two weeks after they met and shared 72.5 wonderful years together before he passed away. They were often seen holding hands and as the years passed by you would find them sitting in their respective recliners holding hands.
A woman of God with strength and dignity, a witty sense of humor, and a smile that would light up any room, Cloma will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. We would like to believe that she's holding hands with Jim once again as they walk down streets of gold together.
