Donald "Dongreen"
Duane Green
Apr 26, 1933 — Mar 28, 2019
Johnson City
Donald Duane Green , 85, passed away at his home on March 28, 2019. He was born in Hamlin, Texas on April 26, 1933 to Edward Wade and Lila Belle Green. When he was little, he was given the nickname Sugar by his mother, because she said he was so sweet. That's what he told us anyway.
He graduated from Hamlin High School, where he was a star running back on the Hamlin Pied Piper football team, and in his yearbook his name is listed as Sugar Green. His family and friends from Hamlin still call him Sugar. He received a full scholarship to Texas A&M University to play football, but his heart was set on becoming a pharmacist, and so he instead went to Austin to attend the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. He always rooted for his Horns, although when they played Notre Dame he was torn about who to root for because he had become a Catholic in college. During his years at U.T. he worked as an orderly at the old Seton Hospital and the Daughters of Charity sisters and nuns always saw that he was well fed and taken care of while he was working his way through Pharmacy School.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy for four years, where he was promoted to Lieutenant JG, and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Hazelwood as the Chief Gunnery Officer. He loved to tell his Navy stories!
The Drugstore was the center of town, where people came to meet up and visit, as well as get their prescriptions filled. He loved serving the whole community of Johnson City as their pharmacist and advice-giver for many years. He loved to write down and remember the births, marriages, deaths, and other events that happened in town. He was called Dongreen by almost everyone, having been given that name by 2 year old Gage Dahmann. He is Dongreen to this day.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lesa Green; two brothers, Winston and Kenneth Green; one sister, Joan Tidwell; and one granddaughter, Christy Crossley.
Dongreen is survived by his loving wife of almost 47 years, Frankie (Gliddon) Green; three children, Sidney Crossley, Terry Green Witty and husband Reggie, and Wade Green and wife Tammy; sister, Pat Andrews; brother, Clifford Green; five grandchildren, Amy, Laura, Angie, Cade, and Brenna; a host of nieces and nephews, including two very special nieces Tyler Farrington and MacKenzie Koyl Allen; and his dear, dear friend and work sidekick June Dahmann and her family. Dongreen is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and many other relatives and dear friends.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Crofts – Crow Funeral Chapel in Johnson City with Pastor Jimmy Boatright officiating.
