Dorothy Howard began her life in the Texas Hill Country and will be returned to her homeland to be laid to rest. After being born in Mason, Texas she moved with her family to Blanco, Texas. Her life was full of good times playing and exploring the beautiful countryside around her home. She had family and friends with her all the time and would tell stories about riding to town on a horse sitting behind her Grandfather, catching tadpoles in the river, or hiding a chunk of cornbread in a tree for an after school snack. After finishing high school she attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas. She really liked science and wanted to study medicine in order to become a doctor, but abandoned that plan upon discovering that academic path took a lot of math too. Instead, she pursued and received both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education and proceeded on her career of over 34 years teaching elementary school.
Dorothy was one of the last great school teachers of Texas. She began her teaching career in George West, Texas then continuing on in San Antonio, Texas after moving there in the late '50s. She taught in the North East Independent School District until moving to Seguin in 1971 where she completed her career and retired.
Dorothy was the kind of teacher that would create wonderful bulletin boards for the seasons and holidays, stand guard over the children at early morning recess and give a child lunch money out of her own pocket if they forgot theirs. She devoted much of her life to helping thousands of young children find excitement and pleasure in their education. Her alumni stretched far and wide over Central Texas and she would consistently meet them wherever she would go.
When not in the school room Dorothy devoted her time and attention to loving and supporting her family. She was a devout wife and strong and guiding mother. She believed in developing and maintaining mental fortitude and spiritual strength to help overcome obstacles in life. She always found the "good" in people and was patient and supportive for everyone she met. Always the teacher, Dorothy would oftentimes revert to her school house experience and deliver a "lesson" to her audience.
Dorothy will be remembered as a true Texas Woman, a lady of dignity, style and fashion. Her positive attitude, dedication, love of God and country, is an example for all of us to follow.
