Dorothy C. Warrington
1917–2019
At 101 years, Dorothy Candlin Warrington died peacefully on March 6, 2019, at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City, TX. Dot was born on April 13, 1917, to Dr. George Candlin and teacher Myrtle Dean Candlin in Presidio, TX. As a kid in the 1920s, Dottie lived with her family in Presidio, Alpine, and Laredo, TX. She earned a BA in Spanish at Texas Christian University. From 1946 to 1948, Dottie was with the American Friends Service Committee in Shanghai, China, where she learned Mandarin, married Donald C. Warrington, and had her first child. Upon their return to the United States, they spent two years at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Then, in 1950, Don began his lifelong work with the YMCA. They raised their three children in Reading and Taremtum, PA, and then overseas in Costa Rica and Colombia. In 1981, they built their retirement home in Blanco, TX, where Dottie began her many years of volunteering at the Blanco Library. Throughout her life, she kept in touch with friends and family through her yearly Christmas letter. She will be remembered for her fiery spirit, deep laugh, fruitcakes, and her love of music, painted buntings, and bluebonnets. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her two sisters, Jerry Copeland and Omce Depew; and grandson Santi Robert G. Hess III. She is survived by her three children, Tom, Patricia, and Nancy; her granddaughter, Sarabella Rocha; and eleven nieces and nephews. We want to thank all the people who cared for Dottie these past years at Live Oak Medical Center, Henry House, and LBJ Medical Center. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Blanco Library. Contributions in her name may be made to the Blanco Library, 1118 Main St., Blanco, TX 78606.
