Douglas Johnston
Widell
Oct 8, 1946 — Jul 11, 2025
Johnson City
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Johnston Widell on July 11, 2025, in Johnson City, Texas. Born on October 8, 1946, in Putnam, Connecticut, he was a beloved son of the late Forbes and Carl Widell.
Doug, as his loved ones knew him, illuminated every room he entered with his bright smile and frequent jokes. Although his sudden passing has caused pain for his friends and family, he has left a profound, lasting impact on those whom he has crossed paths with and will leave a void in the hearts of many.
Doug had several meaningful relationships throughout his lifetime: Tricia Timmins, Dixie Mark (John), Maria Welker, Sharon Widell (G.L. Best), and Kathy Donzis (Lewis). He is also survived and missed by his loving children: Monica Bruce, Todd Widell, Coe Juracek (stepson), Drew Widell, Paris Welker-Widell, Annie Ritchie, and Zac Hall (stepson). Furthermore, he had several grandchildren of whom he was very proud: Colette, Brandon, Dominick, Nolan, Carly, Afton, Dane, Grace, Gus, and West. Additionally, Doug leaves behind his brothers Carl and David Widell, his sister Patricia Marx, and many other close friends and family whom he loved deeply.
After spending his early childhood in Seattle, WA and Portland, OR, Douglas grew up in St. Louis, MO, where he had some of his fondest memories. Beginning in the fourth grade, he attended Clark Elementary School and met his best friend Guy Mellor, whose friendship with Doug stood the test of time. Over the next few years, he was a student at Hixson Middle School. During this time, he found pleasure in visiting the park and playing sports with friends. His high school years were spent at the St. Louis Country Day School, where he was a part of the varsity baseball, basketball, and cross-country programs, as well as Student Council. He was elected Vice-President of the senior class and received recognition as the team captain and Honorable Mention All-City during his senior baseball season. Doug continued his education at Purdue University where he received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Management with a minor in Computer Science. During his time at Purdue, he played freshman baseball and created lifelong friendships by pledging the Sigma Chi fraternity. He enjoyed staying in touch and reminiscing with his fraternity brothers over the years. He went on to receive his MBA with a Finance concentration from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Doug was a lifelong learner with an entrepreneurial spirit and endless curiosity that led to a wide-ranging career. He flew jets in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country by training other pilots and eventually other trainers. He was an early pioneer in computer programming, developing custom software during the dawn of the digital age. He was a commercial real estate developer, where he helped create and shape communities in Florida, Virginia, and Texas. In his later years, he combined his love of flight and technology through aerial photography, and he offered website development services for local businesses and churches. His life's work reflected his creative mind, his strong work ethic, and his quiet passion for helping others.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Doug was a man of rich passions and deep generosity. A lifelong baseball fan, he followed the St. Louis Cardinals. He appreciated music and played both the piano and guitar. His kind nature made him a true dog lover. Inspired by his work, he had a lifelong love of technology and flying. And he enjoyed golf, bowling, cigars, and a good book. More than anything, he loved people. He cherished time with his family and friends and took pride in their accomplishments.
Doug's legacy extends beyond words. His dedication to bringing joy to others will be remembered through his endless supply of witty puns and ability to make light of every difficult situation. He acted selflessly, putting the wants and needs of others before himself. He always reminded loved ones of the importance of having fun and not taking anything too seriously, highlighting his commitment to making the most of every moment and moving with purpose. He lived his life with grace and humility, inspiring others to do the things that bring them the most happiness and fulfillment, while prioritizing kindness. Although he is gone, his endless compassion, faith, and humor will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to commemorate the life of Douglas. In lieu of flowers, donations for the Humane Society are welcome to celebrate his love for dogs.
