Edna Amelia
Augusta Maenius
Jul 26, 1929 — May 4, 2016
Johnson City
Edna "Nana" Amelia Augusta Raulz Maenius, of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the age of 86. Edna "Nuddy" is survived by her daughter, Donna Felps and husband Thomas; her daughter Myra Haynes all from Johnson City, and seven grandchildren: Myron Felps; Tatum Craig and husband Garrett; Lindy Harris and husband Eddie; Cassie Maenius; Michael Maenius; Glory Maenius; Walt Maenius; and four great-grandchildren Anna, Ava and Preston Craig and Calli Harris; and many, many other children through her years of providing childcare in the community.
She was born to John Raulz and Frieda Peese on July 26, 1929. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dora and her husband Chester Wallendorf; her loving husband for 52 years Werner Maenius; her son, Boysie; and many more family and friends.
Edna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her heart and home were always filled with love, laughter, and an endless supply of homemade food. Nana loved surrounding herself with family and friends. It was a daily occurrence to walk into her door and see her smile and say "well hello stranger". Even if it had only been a few days since your last visit. You would not be in her home long before she was offering one of her many homemade treats. No one was allowed to leave her home hungry. she was often referred to as a "food pusher". You would always hear her say "oh you can eat some more", or "hear have one more piece" even if you were so stuffed you could hardly move. She knew exactly each person's favorite treat. Whether it be her amazing homemade bread, pies, seven layer dip, cheese toast for breakfast, and her wonderful sweet rice… each dish was made from scratch and love. A box of dominoes or skip-bo cards were always within her reach. And you would not be there long before she was challenging you to a game. Whether it be straight dominoes, 42, or "Shoot the Moon", she was always ready to play, and play to win. You had to have a keen mind to defeat her at 42. She pretty much knew what dominoes you had after your first move. You knew you were in trouble and she had you beat when you would hear her start to chuckle. And she was very patient when teaching one of her grandkids or great grandkids skip-bo or bingo. She loved to go sit on the banks fishing for catfish. Although not a hunter herself, she always had her knife sharp ready for the next big kill. There was always lots of meat to work up for the next big sausage making day. Edna loved to two-step, waltz, and polka. And through years, enjoyed watching and listening to the polka shows on tv. Nana started many traditions for her family and friends. Her two favorite holidays were Easter and Christmas. Since her first grandchildren were old enough, dying Easter eggs at her kitchen table was a big deal and never in 40 years were the traditions missed. The same went for making Christmas cookies. With antique cookie cutters and many, many rolling pins, the whole family spent hours together making Christmas cookies. Every afternoon you could find her sitting on her porch, enjoying the weather and watching the many deer and turkeys she fed daily. Nana always had a German saying or little song to tell one of the little ones in her life. She spent many years babysitting and helping to raise kids in the community. Each child treasured her as much as she treasured each of them, although on occasion you might hear her giving one a scolding in German. Of strong German decent, she enjoyed her time sitting around with some of the old timers talking in German. Edna was many things to many people and touched and affected many lives. For us, she was the love that kept our family together. She taught us how to appreciate the little things in life and used her love and laughter to fill her home and our hearts with love and memories that will never be forgotten.
