Elsie Ehrlich Sultemeier
May 24, 1923- August 8, 2014
Elsie passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday night at Knopp's Nursing Home in Fredericksburg, Texas at the age of 91. She was characterized as a "feisty Lady" by the nursing home staff and residents. We all know that this means she was an ornery, tell it like it is woman. While she didn't mince her words, she will be remembered fondly by those of us that were fortunate enough to know her. We might not have always been on her good side, yet we always knew that she had great love and concern for our health and what went on in our lives. In the very biased opinions of her grandchildren, "she could gossip with the best of them, and probably cook better than the rest of them." There was seldom a time when one visited her that he/she wouldn't get a full update on the family and news of back home, whether that was the Sandy or Johnson City communities or her family's home place in Caldwell County.
During her lifetime she was a devoted wife, hardworking rancher, store keeper and post mistress and a wonderful "Granny". She spent many evenings playing 88 or 42 or "Moon", or whatever else she could get you to play. She enjoyed fishing and was competitive enough that she would always try to beat the grandkids in both number of fish caught as well as the biggest, and heaven forbid she get beat? she would gripe for a long while (looking back it was probably with a smile) and vow to do better than you next time. She was active in the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City until she was no longer able. Elsie was a "Daughter of the Texas Republic", and "Daughter of the Confederacy". She will be long remembered for her cooking? everything from her sweet rice and Post-Toasty squares to her cooked cheese or chocolate cake with "axle-grease" icing or her peach or dewberry cobbler with homemade ice cream. Whether she was cooking for her immediate family or large groups at reunions or Thanksgiving or scout meetings or school functions, she always put out a spread and cooked with love. You would not be allowed to her leave her home hungry or empty handed.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Sultemeier, their daughter, Darnell Sultemeier Porter, as well as her parents Max and Mary Dittmar Ehrlich and six brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her son, Darrell Sultemeier and wife Pam, their children: Branden Sultemeier and wife Angie, and Whitney Walston and husband Ty and great-grandchildren Emma and Tyler; as well as grandson, Trey Porter and wife Kim and great-grandchildren Wesley and Kylie. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She will be greatly missed.
Pallbearers include Alan Ehrlich, Lloyd Lippe, Terrell Olle, Jack Strouse, Charles Norris and Otto Meyers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Elsie's memory to the Johnson City First United Methodist Church, the Post Oak Cemetery Fund, or a charity of ones choice.
Visitation will be 5:00 ? 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Crofts ? Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City where funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday morning. Interment will follow in Post Oak Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception and time of fellowship will follow in the Post Oak School House.
