Evelyn Emma
Heckel
Dec 21, 1924 — Jan 22, 2018
Blanco
Evelyn Emma (Schaefer) Heckel received her angel wings on Monday January 22, 2018 at the age of 93. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Evelyn was born on December 21, 1924 in New Braunfels, Texas to Ernst and Emma (Burkhardt) Schaefer. She was the first born of twin daughters.
Evelyn met Emil Heckel in 1954 at a German dance hall in New Braunfels. On January 16, 1955 they were married at the ENR Church in New Braunfels. They welcomed three baby girls in the years following. Evelyn and Emil went dancing the first Saturday of every month at that same dance hall. Their daughters grew up going there and learned how to dance as soon as they could walk. She was a stay at home mom taking great care of her family. Evelyn, Emil and the girls lived on several different ranches in Blanco where Emil was a ranch foreman.
Evelyn enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, her chickens, making clothes for her daughters and helping them with their 4-H projects. She was a 4-H leader for many years and was recognized as "4-H Leader of The Year".
As the years went by and the kids grew up she found new hobbies which she greatly enjoyed. She volunteered for Meals On Wheels for over 20 years. She made many handmade quilts for her family, crocheted and embroidered doll dresses, quilts and scarves among other things. She also loved reading romance and detective stories and playing with her cat April. She enjoyed collecting rocks and bottles and was excited when she found a new treasure to add to her collection.
Evelyn loved teaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren German nursery rhymes. There always was laughter from being tickled, making cookies, stories of her younger years or games of Skip-Bo and Wa Hoo.
Evelyn and Emil spent 36 wonderful years together building a life they loved. Evelyn was a member of the Blanco United Methodist Church for 62 years.
Evelyn loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much. She will be dearly missed.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters: Patricia Holder (Tommy), Kathy Heckel, and Peggy Berryhill (Danny) all of Blanco. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren and other loving family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Emil Heckel, twin sister Ethyln Wager, her brother Elgin Schaefer, grandson Ashton Edwards, two sister in-laws and three brother in-laws.
