Johnson City
Genevia Brown Bushnell , age 87, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2019, at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City, Texas. Genevia is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Deward R. (DR) Bushnell, Jr.; son, David Bushnell and wife Heather, of New Braunfels, grandson Derek Bushnell, and granddaughter Emily (Bushnell) Akers and husband Dale of Sugarland; son, Dennis Bushnell and wife Lynette, of Johnson City, grandson Seth Bushnell, and granddaughter Madison Bushnell; son, Ronnie Bushnell and wife Patricia, of Johnson City, granddaughter Tara Bushnell of Fort Collins, Colorado, and granddaughter Dana Bushnell of Rowlett. Genevia was preceded in death by her parents, James and Zelma Brown, and grandparents, Joe and Millie Dixon.
Orphaned two days after birth, Genevia was raised by her grandparents and other family members. Genevia left home at the age of twelve to support herself as her family didn't have enough food to feed everyone. She lived with gracious families throughout the community. While attending school, Genevia worked in various local restaurants. Genevia met her future husband, DR, when he escorted her in the 1951 county fair queen's coronation. They were married on April 11, 1952 and shortly afterward left the area following employment opportunities. They returned to Johnson City in the early 1960s with three sons. Over the years, they established and ran various businesses including the Burger Box, Bushnell's Buffeteria, Wee Care Day Care, Genevia's Treasures, and an Independent Shaklee Distributorship. Genevia was a member of the First Christian Church of Johnson City. Having a passion for sewing, Genevia sewed most of her clothes until she could no longer thread a needle. She once put her sewing talent to work sewing over 400 aprons that were sold, raising funds for her church. Genevia loved her family, having a special place in her heart for her six grandchildren, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and shopping for junk and antiques.
A memorial service celebrating Genevia's life will be held at the First Christian Church, Johnson City, at 2 PM, Monday, September 23, 2019. Friends and family are welcome to gather at 1 PM, before the memorial, for a time of remembrance and visitation.
