Robert George Danz
2/7/1937 - 2/16/2024
On February 7, 1937, Casper and Doris Kelley Danz welcomed a baby boy. They gave him the name Robert George Danz. He was also known as George, Big G, Rent-a-Husband, Candy Man, and Paw Paw.
On February 16, 2024, George went to his heavenly home. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kermit Danz.
George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosie Lechow Danz; son, Troy and wife Becky; grandson Joshua, who was the apple of his eye; brother Michael of Johnson City; cousin Johnnie Withers Jackson of Lake Jackson, TX; sister-in-law Margie Kneese and husband Jimmy; nephew Todd Kneese and wife Sandra; and great nieces and nephews.
After his retirement from thirty-five years with the Texas Department of Transportation, George worked another twenty years as a handy man for the Johnson City Bank.
George's profound influence in Johnson City will be felt for generations because of his love and support of young people. He served many years on the Johnson City Independent School Board. He was director of the Blanco County Youth Council, and a founding member of The Johnson City Youth Foundation. He coached several Little League baseball teams. One of those teams that he began coaching as Pee Wee players, earned a place as competitors at the state high school baseball tournament. George did not miss many of the Johnson City baseball, football or basketball games. He also announced plays for the high school football team for many years.
One of George's favorite events was vacation Bible school at First Christian Church. He always kept a stash of candy in his pocket to give to any kid smart enough to ask. As a member of the Cookie Monsters, a group that bakes cookies for Kairos, a prison ministry, he kept a tally of the 22,128 cookies they made.
Civic involvement was also important to George. He served as the Director of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and helped with Lights Spectacular preparations every November and December.
The family wishes to offer their sincere thanks to the staff at LBJ Medical Center, Methodist HCM Hospice of Fredericksburg, and Dr Weaver and staff in Blanco, Texas.
