Gerald Michael (Mike) Adkins

Sunrise July 6, 1944 - Sunset January 26, 2025

To know Mike was to know a kind and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor.  He was a storyteller extraordinaire who could "spin a yarn" in the most unique fashion.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a master outdoor chef known for his barbecues and fish fries.  He very much enjoyed his membership in the New Braunfels Elks lodge.

Mike grew up in Cotulla, Texas. In High School he was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in both tennis and football.  He earned a football scholarship to Texas A&I, where he played under legendary coach Gil Steinke for two years.  He ultimately graduated in 1971 from Southwest Texas University in San Marcos with a degree in Education.  He was a gifted teacher whose empathy and leadership touched the lives of those he taught and coached for many years in South San Antonio ISD. It was there where he met and married fellow teacher and coach Gina Garcia.

The Garcia family became Mike's family.  He and Gina moved to Blanco after obtaining his Master's degree in Education in 1980 from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. There, he served as Principal of Blanco High School and then, Superintendent of Blanco ISD for the next 20 years.  He retired in 1999.

Mike is predeceased by his wife, Gina. He is survived by Gina's siblings and their family members.  Blessed to find love again, he is also survived by his devoted companion and soul mate of 25 years, Deborah Hewett.  He leaves behind many friends, whom he loved and cherished.  He had such a big heart to go with those bright blue eyes and impish smile. He will be deeply missed.
