Gilbert "Gibby" Robert Weiss went to be home with the Lord on Monday, September 3, 2018. The 7 th of 11 children, he was born on June 2, 1924 to Ewald and Augusta (Pflug) Weiss in Cele, TX.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Pat; children, Marcy Voss and husband Wayne, Robin Baxter and husband David, step-son, David Woods and wife Phyllis, step-daughter, Susan Whittington and husband Sam; grandchildren, Morgan Voss and Forrest Voss, step-grandchildren, CPT. Clayton Woods and wife Jo, Colin Woods, Rilee Moser and Luke Whittington; step-great grandson, Theodore Woods. He is also survived by sisters, Ruth Jean Pfennig of Pflugerville, and Janell Heine of Manor and brother, James Weiss of Manor as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mr. Wiess was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lee; son, Mark Weiss, and grandson, Capt. Mark "Tyler" Voss; brothers, Leroy, Alton, Ewald Jr. "Sonny", and Kermit; sisters, Irene Rust, Mildred Marshall, and Waldine Franklin.
During his life, Gilbert held various career positions. After beginning work at an early age at his father's cotton gin, his jobs included working for the Texas Water Development Board, serving as Mayor of Manor, TX and working as an agent for Hermann Sons Life Insurance for 56 years. Gilbert proudly served the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He was in the 440 th Group, 97 th Squadron. He served in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, the Rhine and Holland invasions as a Radio Operator and flew in a C-47 transport plane that dropped paratroopers and supplies to our soldiers. They supplied Patton's tanks with fuel and supplies.
In addition to spending time with his family, Gilbert enjoyed singing, dancing, camping and playing 42. However, most important of all, Mr. Weiss loved going to church. His favorite bible verse was John 3:16.
A visitation will be held Friday, September 7, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 8, 2018 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 17701 Cameron Rd., Pflugerville, TX 78660. A reception will follow at the church fellowship hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 703 Main St., Blanco, TX 78606; St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the charity of your choice.
