Celebrate Helen Cook, a life of love, faith and fulfillment
Helen Irene (Cammack) Cook was 87 years old when she lost her courageous battle with cancer on January 31, 2021. She lived in the Dominion Hills neighborhood in San Antonio for 15 years.
She was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 10, 1933 to Delbert Alton and Helen Bernice Cammack. Her father was an oilfield worker and moved frequently, so Helen grew up in 37 different towns before starting high school. She spent her high school years in Goliad, Texas. She married the love of her life, high school sweetheart, Oscar Bryson Cook on June 20, 1953. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcus.
She was a devout Christian and led an exemplary life including many charitable activities in the church (teaching English as a second language to non-English members). She later joined the Leon Springs Presbyterian Church where she made many new friends and enjoyed their fellowship.
Her real treasure was her family, her three children, Bryce (Ardonna) Cook, Diane (Tim) Sharp and Jill (Rodney) Hodde, her eight grandchildren, Lauren (Witt), Ryan (Autumn) and Shannon Cook, Conner, Dylan and Darby Sharp, Kyle and Brooke (Ryan) Hodde. She also had 6 great grandchildren, Hayes, Lane and Reese Featherston and Briggs, Bryson and Bruin Bailey. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Oscar who died from lung cancer on October 3, 2004.
Her constant smile and witty sense of humor is remembered by many family and friends. Those who had the opportunity of knowing Helen, stayed a friend and companion for life. She always was willing to listen, give of her time and help or assist wherever she could.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2013, she received exceptional care from Dr. Scott Ulmer and his team at the START Center in San Antonio.
