Obituary

Janet "Jan" Marek Biggs , 76, of Johnson City, Texas, passed away on April 15, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jan was born on March 15, 1950, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to George Vinc Marek, one of eleven siblings, and Doris "Dottie" LaRue Briggs Marek.  Jan is the eldest of three children and is survived by her siblings, Karen Kay Freer and Curtis Allen Marek. She grew up in Portland, Texas, surrounded by a large extended family of cousins, fostering close relationships that remained important throughout her life. Jan always looked forward to reconnecting with her MANY cousins at the Marek Family Reunion every year.

She graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 1968, where she earned the title of "Miss Betty Crocker." Jan met the love of her life, James Lawrence Biggs of Taft, on a blind date.  They were married on November 27, 1970, at First Baptist Church, Portland, Texas.

Jan and James began their family in Portland, Texas. Their first daughter, Jodi Lynn Biggs, was born on June 24, 1975, and went to be with Jesus on June 27, 1975. Their daughter, Amanda di Biggs, was born on October 12, 1977, followed by their son, Christopher Lee Biggs, on March 26, 1980.

While raising her family in Portland, Jan was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church Portland, where she participated in the choir, handbell choir, Mother's Day Out, and Vacation Bible School.

In 1986, James and Jan moved their family to Kingwood, Texas. There, Jan began a 19-year career as assistant to the Minister of Music at Kingwood First Baptist Church. She was deeply involved in church life, serving in the choir, handbells, Sunday School, children's choirs, and Vacation Bible School. During this time, Jan and her son Chris also had the opportunity to serve on mission trips to Romania.

Following James's retirement in 2010, they moved to Frisco, Texas, to be closer to their children. The family faced difficult years as James battled dementia and Chris battled cancer. After Chris's passing on August 30, 2017, a long and courageous battle with cancer, Jan and Amanda chose to move closer to extended family. They built a home on the Freer family ranch in Johnson City, affectionately known as "Happy Pill Hill," where Jan & Amanda lived surrounded by her sister, nieces, and loved ones.  She also became "YaYa" when Christopher "Cole" Wingo joined the family on March 26, 2020.

Jan became a member of First Baptist Church Johnson City, where she continued to share her passion for children's ministry. She treasured her church family and the many friendships she formed there.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband James Biggs; her son, Christopher Biggs; her daughter, Jodi Lynn Biggs; her parents, George and Doris Marek and nephew, Michael White.
