Johnson City
Jay Roger Danz
, age 83 and US Army veteran, passed peacefully at his home in Johnson City, TX, in the morning hours of Sunday, November 29, 2020. He was born to Jay Danz and Lucy Maude Felps Danz on August 18, 1937 in a house on the banks of McCall Creek, in Blanco County. He was one of hundreds of local residents delivered by Margaret Casparis Walker.
Roger is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra Gayle Weirich Danz, his son David Jay Danz and wife Martha, his daughter Tracy Diane Corpus, and friend JJ Bogacz, four grandchildren, Caitlyn Corpus, Jayme Roschetzky and husband Devin, Dayton Danz and Kelly Danz, and one great granddaughter Maddie Roschetzky all of Johnson City. He is also survived by nephew Dale Burks and wife Jane of Blanco, and nieces Pam Dechert and husband Wallace of Henly, and Debbie Marbach and husband Bruce of Spring Branch, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister, Patsy Danz Lanty and niece, Linda Maritan.
A lifetime resident of Johnson City and Blanco County, Texas, he will be remembered by all for being a prankster and enjoying a chance to gamble anytime. Many a day was spent rolling dice against a wall in town. He spent his life as a rancher and inventor. His most prized inventions were turning a VW beetle into a dune buggy and getting a patent on a "chain mate."
He owned several businesses including a car wash, a barbecue restaurant, a convenient store at Pedernales Falls State Park and many weekends selling BBQ by the pound. He worked on several ranches, sold cars at the Ford dealership, worked at LCRA, and was a barber.
In his young adult life, he spent many hours boating on the lake and many more hunting deer with Will Dahmann, Roy Finch, Denny Wayne Stevenson, Butch Gliddon, and numerous others. He may have also harvested a watermelon or two from moving watermelon trucks.
He loved his family and gathering for family meals with a chance to visit, tell stories and play a few rounds of 42.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 2 at 10 am at Miller Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you gather with family or friends and play a game of 42 or make a donation to the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of your choice.
