Obituary

Joe Wayne Smitherman was born on August 29, 1934.  Joe left his earthly body and went peacefully in his sleep on August 30, 2019 at the age of 85.  A man of few words, he was a valued educator and rancher with a strong work ethic whose first priority was always to care for his family.

Born to Joseph and Hazel Smitherman in Henly, Texas.  Joe graduated from Johnson City High School at the age of 16.  Joe received his BS and Master's Degree from Southwest Texas State Teacher's College.  Joe started teaching school for Blanco Independent School District in 1953 and retired in 1990.  During his years with Blanco ISD, Joe's true passion was math, but he also served as principal, coach and bus driver, often at the same time.  Joe touched many lives through his time with Blanco Independent School District.  Joe's teaching years were interrupted for two years from 1957-1959 when he served in the Army.  Joe served in Huntsville, Alabama, working on computers associated with the early missile program.  After retirement, Joe enjoyed spending more time with his family.  He pursued his passion for gardening and ranching.  Joe always had an abundant garden for every season.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Jody and Hazel Smitherman and sister Louise Gravenor.  Joe leaves behind his bride of sixty years and the love of his life, his other half, Anita Beckmann Smitherman.  Joe also leaves behind his absolute greatest accomplishments, his children; Steve Smitherman, (Cathi) Gary Smitherman, (Tracy) and Nancy Smitherman Romero. (Tito)  Joe also leaves behind nine grandchildren whom he adored and dearly loved; Mandy Lynch, (Ryan) Kelsey Smitherman, Shelby Smitherman, Jake Smitherman, Ross Smitherman, Tess Smitherman, Owen, Josie and Augustus Romero.  Two great grandchildren Andrew and Ardyn Lynch, a much adored sister-in-law, Medora Beckmann, and step-grandson Grant Pierce.

Joe was a man of few words, but a thousand pure thoughts.  He had a heart of gold.  Joe had a love for his family that was unwavering and never ending.
