John Hall Thomas MD
1944 to 2014
John Hall Thomas MD, 70, of Round Mountain Texas, TX died peacefully in Van Horn, Texas on November 23, 2014. Born October 22, 1944 in Austin, Texas, he was the second child of the late John Fulton Thomas MD and Martha Hall Thomas. John earned his undergraduate degree at University of Texas, Austin where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After graduating from UT, he entered medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans. He then transferred to the newly opened UT Medical School in San Antonio where he graduated president of the first graduating class from the medical school of the University. John interned at Lackland Air Force Base for one year; after which he was made captain in the Air Force serving as a flight surgeon at Beale Air Force Base in California. He later moved to Nacogdoches, TX to open a private general practice.
Dr. Thomas lived a full life. He got his pilot's license in Alaska in the late 60s. He spent all of his boyhood summers working on the Thomas Parrish (TP) ranch and there began a love for animals. His private family medicine practice took him to small towns throughout Texas, including Wellington, Marble Falls, Van Horn and Johnson City. When he wasn't tending to his patients in the hospital or in homes, he was constantly working on his ranch in the Hill Country and visiting friends. Dr. Thomas was tenaciously curious and unafraid to tackle new challenges in innovative ways. In the early 80s, as a self-taught computer programmer, he wrote one of the first practice management systems for small to medium sized doctors' offices and operated his private practice on this software before marketing his system to other practices. His hobbies varied widely, including hunting, ranching, construction, and box car derby racing, as well as sharing his love of medicine. His personal faith was reflective in several Christian books he authored. Later in life his time was spent volunteering for Christian missions in Africa and Latin America. John attended Bible study twice a week as a member of the St Luke's Episcopal Church in Cypress Mill.
His children include Rachel Fessler and husband Mark Fessler, San Antonio, TX, Benjamin Hall Thomas and wife Leah Pedersen Thomas, Houston, TX, Joshua Mark Thomas and wife Megan Thomas, San Francisco, CA as well as his beloved chocolate lab, Coco. Grandchildren are as follows: Mackenzie Grace Fessler, Megan Sue Fessler, Mathew Maxwell Fessler, Michael Joseph Fessler, Mylie Abigail Fessler and Windel Peace Thomas.
