Joseph E. (Joe) Johnson, Jr. entered into glory on Monday, April 3, 2017 at the age of 79. Born to Frances H. Halfmann Johnson and Joseph E. Johnson, Sr. on December 20, 1937 at the Nix Hospital in San Antonio, TX and attended St. Ann's Parochial School from 1944 – 1952, graduating from Central Catholic High School in May, 1956. Enlisting in the United States Air Force January, 1957 as Airman Basic, he was stationed at Wiesbaden, Germany effective April, 1957 for 19 Months, then spent 12 months in USMA Preparatory Scholl, Fort Belvoir, VA transferring to Carswell Air Force (SAC) Base in Ft. Worth, TX. Joe was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent E-5 in September 1961. He then attended St. Mary's University from 1961 – 1965, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration, BBA in Economics.
Joe started working on the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1960 making student trips while still in the Air Force. In 1961 he started working full time as a railroad brakeman and was promoted to conductor in 1965. After graduating college he went to work for Proctor & Gamble in November, 1965 retiring in July, 1993. He graduated Peace Officer School and began working part time as a Bexar County Sheriff Deputy from 1990 – 1993. After retiring from Proctor & Gamble in 1993 he went to work for Blanco Co Sheriff Department as a deputy in July, 1993, retiring in 2009 after achieving the rank of Master Peace Officer and Chief Deputy in Blanco Co. under Sheriff Bill Elsbury.
Joe and Jeanette had four beautiful children; Dawn Michelle Boatright and husband Scott, Eric Joseph Johnson and wife Lisa, Stephanie Anne Whitson and husband Jerry, and Blaire William Johnson and wife Wendy; eight grandchildren, Tiffany and Hunter Hulse, Madison Johnson, Nathan and Macie Whitson, Corbin, Joshua and Ella Rose Johnson. His children and grandchildren were his crowning glory, giving him his greatest joy in this life.
This was a man of virtue, showing kindness to those who were less fortunate than him and always upholding his Christian values of loving your neighbor, speaking the truth and believing that people can always better themselves with hard work and a humble spirit. His family and community will miss him terribly. Joe is now in Heaven with Jesus and his beloved family and friends who passed on before him.
Please join the family for a visitation on Friday, April 7, 2017, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City.
Services honoring and celebrating Joe's life will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 8, 2018 at Liberty Lighthouse Fellowship, 321 Old River Crossing, Johnson City, TX 78636. Interment will follow in the Rocky Creek Community Cemetery.
