Obituary

Joycelyn Vermelle Carter, of Johnson City, Texas, peacefully departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of Sunday, January 19, 2025. Born in Waco, Texas, on December 27, 1929, she was a cherished daughter of James Roy Clark and Hettie Belle (Abbott) Clark.

Joycelyn pursued her education with vigor, graduating from high school in Big Spring, Texas, in the Class of 1948. She enrolled in the nursing program at the Lilly Jolly School of Nursing in Houston, where she earned her Registered Nursing degree. She began her career as a Registered Nurse specializing in pediatrics before embracing her role as a nursing instructor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. Joycelyn would later retire from Del Mar College as an Associate Professor, having also earned her Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi while shaping the minds of future nurses.

On January 20, 1951, Joycelyn married her high school sweetheart, Terry Alton Carter. Their union was marked by love and partnership for nearly 74 wonderful years. In 1986, she and Terry relocated to Johnson City, where Joycelyn became deeply involved in the community. Her contributions included membership in the Johnson City Women's Club, the Masonic Lodge - Order of The Eastern Star, the Johnson City Lights Spectacular, First Baptist Church, and the Community Garden Club of Johnson City, where she played a pivotal role in establishing their cookbooks.

Joycelyn was preceded in death by her parents, James R. and Hettie Clark, as well as her brother, James Roy Clark, Jr.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Terry A. Carter; their son, Timothy A. Carter and his wife Mary; two grandsons, Justin A. Carter and Daniel P. Carter and wife Samantha; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Will; along with other relatives and a multitude of dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City. Funeral services will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Johnson City. Interment will follow at the Johnson City Masonic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson City Education Foundation.

Joycelyn's legacy of love, service, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
