Dorsett
Aug 22, 1937 — Aug 12, 2023
Blanco
Judy Dorsett
August 22, 1937 – August 12, 2023
Blanco, Texas has lost a "hill country treasure", Judy B Dorsett of Blanco Texas, went to see Jesus on August 12th, in the presence of her kids and in the arms of her Lord and Savior. She passed like she lived her life, with dignity and on her own terms.
Judy was born Bertilee Julene Buck (but was always called Judy), to Chester and Alma Lee Buck on August 22, 1937, in Daingerfield Texas. Her father Chester was a roughneck in the oilfield, and he and the family traveled west and ended up in Andrews, Texas. Judy always loved music, and she excelled in singing. She was selected to the "all state" choir in high school.
Judy met Robert Amburn at a tent revival where Robert's father, Zearl Amburn was preaching. They quickly got married in 1954, had three children, and eventually divorced.
Judy was always an excellent mother, and her kids were her pride and joy. In 1960 the family moved to south Texas and always lived in and around the San Antonio area, including stops in Southwest, Lytle, Seguin, Marion, San Antonio, and eventually her pride and joy, The Gem of the Hills: Blanco, Texas.
In 1991 Judy met the love of her life. A tall, charismatic Oklahoma boy named Bob Dorsett, and they married in 1993. Bob was the perfect fit for her, and their life together in Blanco was what they both always wanted.
When Judy moved to Blanco, she immediately joined the Blanco First Baptist Church, and soon became the featured soloist on Sunday mornings. She joined up with some other close friends and talented musicians to form what would be the Jubilee Singers. Judy loved singing with the group, and they could be heard all over Blanco County at fairs, special events, and even the local senior citizens homes.
Along with her love for music, Judy loved plants, landscape, and horticulture. Judy owned and managed The Good Earth Landscaping Company for many years, and she eventually ended up becoming a master horticulturist, and wrote an article every month for the local newspaper. Judy, always wanting to do more, joined forces with her good friend Rhetta Martin. Together they founded The Keep Blanco Beautiful organization. Keep Blanco Beautiful was her passion, and due to her efforts, the Keep Texas Beautiful Organization named her volunteer of the year in July 2021.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents: Alma Lee and Chester Buck, her siblings, Wanda Kerr, Chessie Lou Freeman, James Varner Buck, Zeddie Edward Buck, and her granddaughter, Julia Renee Amburn.
She is survived by her children: Sheri Renee Pickett, Brian Keith Amburn, and Dawn Michelle Amburn, as well as four (4) grandchildren and seven (7) great-grandchildren. Her oldest daughter Sheri, referred to Judy (Mom) as our North Star, and there has never been anything said that is more appropriate. Her children have all looked to their North Star for direction when they were lost, for guidance when they were in the darkness, and a shining light that you could all look up to. Rest in peace, Judy/Mom/Nina/Little Darlin.
There will be a celebration of life at 10:00AM on Friday, September 8th at Blanco First Baptist Church in Blanco Texas.
