Leonard Darrell Kemp, Sr. of Corpus Christi, Texas died February 13, 2007 in a Corpus Christi hospital after a short illness. He was born April 4, 1926 in Boerne, Texas to L. D. and Rose Esser Kemp. After graduating from Boerne High School, he served in the United States Navy, and then attended Trinity University. In May of 1949 he was employed by Humble Oil & Refining Company and he retired from Exxon in March of 1986 as a Drilling Operation Superintendent. During his career Leonard also traveled with a team under Standard Oil of New Jersey as an instructor of a well control school for the subsidiaries of Humble Oil & Refining Company in the Middle East, South Africa and Norway and was one of two supervisors on the first oil well independently drilled by Exxon on the North Slope in Alaska. After his retirement he consulted for Triton Energy, Manti Resources, Inc., and Headington Oil Company. Leonard is survived by his wife of 56 years Dorothy Sharp Kemp of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughters Karen (Al) Higginbotham of Kingsville Texas and Karla Cannon of Katy, Texas; son Leonard Darrell Kemp, Jr. of Katy, Texas; sister Bonnie Molberg of Boerne, Texas; grandchildren Meagan (Marvin) Guerrero, Anita (Sean) Cruz, Ashley Higginbotham, Sarah Cannon (Jamie) Self, Kate Cannon, Chris Cannon (Dusty) Mullins, Kemp Cannon and Leonard "Trey" Darrell Kemp, III; great grandchildren Alexandra Guerrero, Anneliese Guerrero, and Colton Cruz. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kathy Bourner and granddaughter Allison Higginbotham. A Graveside Service will be held Friday, February 16, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Round Mountain Cemetery in Round Mountain, Texas.A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 4326 McArdle, Corpus Christi, Texas. Pallbearers are nephews Will Liebmann, Charles Damon Sharp, Alan Sharp and David Jordan, cousin Roland Kemp and grandsons Kemp Cannon, Trey Kemp and Dusty Mullins. Honorary Pallbearers are all former employees of Exxon's South Texas Drilling Division.The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 4326 McArdle, Corpus Christi, Texas 78411 or a charity of choice.
