Obituary

Leslie Ann Matus , of San Antonio, Texas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 20, 2018.  Leslie was born in San Francisco, California, to Jim and Anita Moore.  After living her early years in California, Alaska, New Hampshire, and the Seychelles, the Moore family settled in La Porte, Texas in 1966.  Leslie graduated from La Porte High School in 1977 where she enjoyed being part of the Chatos drill team.  She also enjoyed interior design and attended San Jacinto College.  After two years at San Jac, she transferred to the University of Texas at Austin and began work on an Elementary Education degree.  All who knew Leslie can attest that teaching was her passion and life's calling.  It was also at UT that Leslie met her husband, Chuck Matus.  They quickly fell in love and were married in 1984 in the First Baptist Church in Johnson City, Texas, Chuck's hometown. The couple lived in the Houston-Clear Lake area for over 25 years.

Upon receiving her degree from UT in 1983, Leslie began her teaching career in the Houston area.  Over the years, she taught first grade and kindergarten in the Dickinson and Clear Creek school districts and helped start a kindergarten program at her church, Nassau Bay Baptist Church.  In 2010, the couple moved to San Antonio and Leslie took a kindergarten position at Krueger Elementary School in the Northside district.  She taught there until her retirement in 2017.

Leslie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Chuck Matus, and her children, Jennifer Matus, Houston, Stephen Matus, Houston, and Carrie Matus, San Antonio.  Her parents, Jim and Anita Moore, reside in Nacogdoches, Texas.  Her brothers and their wives: Jimmy and Debra Moore, Fort Worth, Texas, Danny and Katrina Moore, Aptos, California, and Michael and Heidi Moore, Frohna, Missouri. Leslie is preceded in death by her second child, Amy Kathleen Matus.

Through her many years of teaching, Leslie touched many lives.  There is nothing more important than establishing a firm foundation for children's education.  Leslie took great pride in seeing a child's world opened up to learning and nothing affirmed her more than the many children and parents who kept in contact over the years.  There was a special place in her heart for each and every child she had the privilege of teaching.  Her love and devotion to teaching and her family will be greatly missed.

Visitation and viewing will be held on Friday, September 28, 5:00-7:00 pm, at Crofts - Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City, Texas.  A celebration of Leslie's life will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church in Johnson City.  Following will be interment at the Masonic Cemetery in Johnson City.
