Obituary

Lottie J. Mills of Johnson City, TX, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Methodist Hospital Fredericksburg. Affectionally known to her family and friends as Jane and Grandma, she was born October 7, 1932 in Litchfield, KY to William Guy Preston and Pearlie Mae (Hack) Preston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 68 years, Thomas Gilbert Mills; two sons, David Wayne Mills and Thomas Keith Mills; son-in-law, David Jay Danz; brother, Amos Woodford Preston, sisters, Emma Lucille Voelker and Frances Mae Merrick.

Jane is survived by her son, Eric Mills and daughter-in-law Terry; daughter, Martha Danz; seven grandchildren, David Mills and wife Erin, Garrett Mills and wife Lauren, Jennifer Kruizenga and husband Mitch, Kathryn Hagale and husband Brian, Jayme Roschetzky and husband Devin, Dayton Danz, and Kelly Danz; eight great grandchildren, Andy Mills, Jacob Mills, Pierce Kruizenga, Emilie Kruizenga, Maddie Roschetzky, Emma Mills, Connor Mills and Landyn Roschetzky with her 9th expected in December. She is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Tom and Jane were engaged on her birthday in 1951; every time you'd ask her about the proposal, she would tell you that he proposed because he needed to get married so he could afford his rent.

She was a fearless military wife, following Tom to Hyattsville, MD, Argentia Naval Air Station, Argentia, Newfoundland, Washington, DC, Johnson City, TX, Gaithersburg, MD and upon Tom's retirement returned to Johnson City for her remaining years.

She has been a member of the Johnson City First United Methodist Church for over fifty years; serving on almost every church committee. While raising four children, she spent a lifetime volunteering; she remained active in numerous community service organizations, including the LBJ Nursing Home, Johnson City hospital auxiliary, North Blanco County EMS, the Emergency Services Auxiliary, The Woman's Club, The Garden Club, United Methodist Women, and Hill Country Lights Spectacular. If you've ever purchased a Christmas ornament inside the courthouse, chances are she had her hands on it. She loved to play games and would never let you win. She enjoyed Uno, Skipbo, dominoes, pinocle, bridge and euchre to name a few of her favorites; she also loved to put together jigsaw puzzles. She must have put together several hundred.

She was a loving and giving person. She sent cards and letters every week to family and friends; always faithfully to her family so they'd know what those Texas Mills were up to. If you made it on her card or Christmas letter list, she considered you family. For Mother's Day every year all she asked was for family to honor her by attending the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry. One of her greatest pleasures was when she received the "Citizen of the Year Award" from the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce even though she never lived in the city limits!
