Obituary

On April 17, 2021, after a short battle with cancer, Robert H. Flannery transitioned from this life to his Eternal Life. One of the Courthouse babies, Robert was born on February 14, 1944, to Dr. and Mrs. John J. Flannery, the youngest of 4 boys. In his 77 years of life on earth, he spent less than 10 years away from his beloved Blanco.

Robert grew up working on the family ranch outside of Blanco, learning a great deal about life, the land, and the animals we share this Earth with from Herman and Mildred Riba. And when he wasn't with the Ribas, he was at school with a very special group of lifelong friends, who remain close to this day. When he left Blanco High School, he went to Kingsville to study Business Management at Texas A&I(now Texas A&M University-Kingsville). It was during his time in Kingsville that he 'stalked', met and married the woman who would be his best friend and partner through life for over 56 years, Linda Childs Flannery.

Robert and Linda moved to Austin after graduation from Texas A&I, and Robert began a 37-year career with The University of Texas System. Their daughter LynEll Marie was born in 1969, followed by son Robert Lee in 1971. By Lee's first birthday, Robert had had enough of Big City life and moved his young family to the ranch he grew up on. In between budget hearings and deadlines at work, Robert taught his family the lessons he had learned from the Ribas, from hauling hay and clearing brush to sausage making, with a few refresher lessons and celebrations with Flannery-Riba get-togethers. And when the chores were done, off to Twin Sisters the family would go, dancing until the band packed up, and hanging out long, after swapping stories with extended family.

Robert was very much the outdoorsman, making many hunting trips to Colorado with hunting buddies, hunting and fishing in South Texas with his brother-in-law Buddy Childs, who he loved to explain he had to jump out of the gene pool to find his closest brother. He took pride in teaching his family how to hunt and fish, often being outdone by Linda when it came to Opening Weekend. One of his fondest memories was taking Lee to Colorado for his first Big Hunt with the Hunting Buddies. When he and Linda retired, they spent most of their time ranching, hunting, working on projects that working in Austin and San Antonio had kept him from completing.  But the one thing that was certain, if you saw Robert, you were bound to see Linda. They were practically inseparable, even scheduling doctor's appointments together.  He once mentioned that he never stopped stalking his champagne blonde, she was just platinum blonde now.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, close friends Herman and Mildred and Joe D. Riba, eldest brother John Flannery, son Lee, and brother-in-law Buddy Childs, and many friends he had shared life with. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Linda, their daughter LynEll and husband Travis Richter, 'bonus' son Jeff Elsey and wife Lisa and family, two brothers William "Bill" (Betty) and Richard "Dick"(Ginger), nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends he chose to do life with.

Robert requested that there not be a funeral, but in the future, a Celebration of Life at Twin Sisters where he and Linda danced so many nights away, and he and many friends swapped stories. In lieu of flowers, he requested that any memorials be sent to Twin Sisters Dance Hall, P.O. Box 1468, Blanco, TX 78606.
