Obituary

June 28, 1917  to  August 29, 2006Roy H. Byars, beloved father, grandfather, neighbor, friend passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2006, in Blanco, Texas, at the age of 89. Roy, born in Rosebud, Texas, came to Blanco with his family after the death of his father in 1918. He grew up within a block of the Square spending most of his years at the "Telephone Office" which his family operated. Survivors are his daughters, Marilyn Mikes, husband, Lawrence of Blanco, Jeanette Leese, husband David of Van Vleck and Patty Haas, husband, Johnnie of San Antonio and his long time friend, Nell Krueger of Blanco. Roy leaves 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, siblings, his wife, El Marie in 1985 and wife, Grace in 1996. His life was spent on the Square in Blanco first for over 30 years as manager of Blanco Lumber/Hardware, then Postmaster for 22 years.  A Veteran of World War II, he served in the 194th Headquarters Group in the European theater. An active member of his community, his main focus was Lions Club, Methodist Church, County Historical Society, and National Weather Service. Officer of organizations including School Board, Hill Country Memorial Hospital Board, Chamber of Commerce, OBCCPS, Red Cross, VFW, American Legion, LBJ Heartland Council, County Fair, Boy Scouts, Rodeo Association, recipient of 2003 Time-Warner Hometown Hero Award, volunteer fireman, on the Board for 57 years and also service to Johnson City Fire Department.The Byars family has been the National Weather Service observers since 1935. Roy received John Campanus Hold Award for exceptional service and this past month was awarded Thomas Jefferson Award, the Coop Program's highest award. One of six nationally and one of two in the entire Southern Region out of 12,000 observers to receive this award.A member of the Lions Club the last 67 years, in Lions Club Hall of Fame having received all awards offered both local and internationally. Services on Saturday, September 2, 2006, Blanco Methodist Church. Interment: Blanco Cemetery. Visitation at Crofts' 5:00 to 8:00, Friday, September 1st. Contributions may be made to Blanco Methodist Church Endowment Fund P.O.Box 339, Blanco,TX 78606.
