Roy Jemmie
Rowe, Jr.
Mar 9, 1937 — May 18, 2022
Johnson City
Roy Jemmie Rowe, Jr. , 85 of Johnson City, Texas entered peacefully into eternal rest on May 18, 2022.
Roy was born on March 9, 1937, in Stanton, California. He grew up in and around Huntington Beach, California where he spent most summers as a lifeguard stationed on the Huntington Beach Pier until his high school graduation in 1955. During high school Roy played varsity football, basketball, and water polo. He attended Orange Coast Junior College where Roy was awarded the 1957 "Best Mechanic" in California.
Roy found his way to Texas when drafted by the United States Army. With the status of "only surviving son" he was eventually stationed at Camp Bullis. It was in San Antonio where he met Louise Meier, the love of his life. Roy walked into a bakery at North Star Mall, as the story goes, seeking a ride back to post. A part-time employee at the bakery, Louise was encouraged by her boss to give Roy a ride. Married in 1962, they spent their first years in California where Roy worked as an auto mechanic with his brother-in-law Ray LeCompte, before moving his young family back to Hye, Texas to be close to Louise's family.
In the early 70s, Roy and Louise moved to the Post Oak Community, and began building their log cabin home from cedar trees harvested from their land. They raised all three children in the house built by Roy's ingenuity and hands. He spent the rest of his life building houses, raising turkeys, cattle, hogs, planting an apple orchard (whilst all his neighbors planted peach orchards) and fixing things. Ever the survivor, he had the ability to build whatever he needed or saw someone else using on their farm, always from a used or broken part. Whatever farming implement or device it was he would change it, modify it, or rebuild it, just to get a little more use and function. Living off the land was a matter of necessity, but also pride and enjoyment for Roy. His venison jerky has never quite been duplicated by his children, but not due to a lack of trying.
Chalked full of a lifetime of experiences, Roy never met a stranger and loved to talk…about his family, sports, the weather, politics or religion. No topic was off limits. His strong will never let his inabilities stop him from doing anything he loved to do. He lived to the fullest, wore his heart where the world could see it, loved eternally, and survived day-to-day.
Roy boldly lived his faith and encouraged his children to seek God first, pray, and remember JOY – Jesus, Others, Yourself.
He is survived by his children Susan Rowe, of Lubbock, Texas; Jemmie Rowe and his wife Nicole of Canyon Lake, Texas; Mary Rowe and her husband Bobby Foster of Boerne, Texas; three grandchildren Alexandria Rowe; August Rowe; Sarah Foster; sister-in-law Mary Frances Meier of Hye, Texas; beloved nieces and nephews; and companion Laverne Davis of Albert, Texas.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife Louise; his parents Roy Jemmie Rowe, Sr. and Edythe Grace Bushnell Rowe; brother Richard Rowe; and sister Mary Jane Rowe LeCompte.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Blanco County 4-H & FFA Youth Council, P.O. Box 1255, Blanco, Texas 78606.
