Steven Wayne
Hill
Sep 17, 1945 — Feb 13, 2020
Johnson City
Steven Wayne Hill of Johnson City passed away at his home on February 12, 2020. He was born on September 17, 1945 in High Point, North Carolina.
Steve proudly served his country in Viet Nam as a Specialist 4th Class in the US Army where he received Expeditionary Medals in Sharpshooter, Marksmanship and an Expert Badge with Rifle Bar.
Steve worked for Jerrold Electronics Corporation as a superintendent for 22 years. During a remodel of their rental houses, word got out that Steve was a skilled builder and Hill Construction was born. He was the owner/operator of Hill Construction for 25 years. Steve retired from the construction business and went to work for the Blanco County Sheriff's Office where he served as a Corrections Officer Supervisor for five and half years. Not one to sit still, Steve worked for a short time for Home Depot in Dripping Springs until his failing eyesight prevented him from driving.
Steve was one of the original founders of the Hill Country Toy Run which supports the Cherokee Home for Children.
Many remember Steve dressing up in his Santa suit and riding his big red Harley to area day care centers to spread Christmas joy to the children. He also delivered a stuffed animal to everyone at the Knopp Nursing Home where his mother-in-law Estha Hobbs was a resident. Steve even showed up at a local basketball game where he distributed stuffed animals to the students of LBJ High School.
Steve's passion was the Kairos Prison Ministry where he and other volunteers worked at the Hughes Prison Unit in Gatesville to bring the message of Christ to the inmates. He marveled at how the Lord worked many miracles in the lives of the "Men in White" in just a four-day period.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Austin Jay Grayson Hill and Hazel Burton Hill; a sister Sandra Hopson and two brothers Jerry and Eddie Hill. Steve is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Hill and Melissa Buchholz who he raised as his own daughter since she was four years old. He is also survived by his brother John Hill, a sister Shannon Michael and husband Scott, and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was a member of the First Christian Church of Johnson City.
Visitation will be from 1:00 - 2:00 PM Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Liberty Lighthouse Fellowship with a memorial service immediately following at 2:00 PM with Rev. Ernest Topper officiating. Steve's memorial will truly be a celebration to the glory of our Lord and Savior. Because of this, wearing bright colors is encouraged. Susan and Melissa would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff of New Century Hospice of Kerrville for their exceptional care and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the First Christian Church, PO Box 848, Johnson City, TX 78636 or Hughes Kairos, PO Box 29163, Austin, TX 76755.
