Violet A.
Waters
Jul 21, 1930 — Oct 23, 2019
Johnson City
Violet A. Waters passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City after many years of loving care.
Violet was born on July 21, 1930 to Clifford and Alberta Haynes in Round Mountain Texas. She was very proud of her Haynes Family history and the times spent on the ranch near Walnut Creek with sisters, Hazel Gatliff, and Alice Schnelle and her brother, George Haynes.
After graduation from Johnson City High School, Violet completed Durham's secretarial school and returned to Round Mountain to marry Nolan Haley.
Violet and Nolan started out on their own with practically nothing. They successfully raised turkeys and cattle and worked to buy their own place in Johnson City. They had two daughters together, Karen Beth, and Linda born eight years apart. Nolan and Violet divorced, after many years of marriage, during Karen Beth's long battle with cancer. It took a toll on Violet and she never fully recovered from the loss of her beloved Karen in 1973.
Violet eventually re-married to Jack D. Waters. She always said that was the best time of her life with her beloved "Jack Waters" her gentle, kind, cowboy. Sadly, all-too-soon she lost Jack to another battle with cancer. Her mother in-law Ruby Waters and Violet became the two "Waters Women" as they liked to joke and were never far apart. Not a day went by that they didn't talk or share a meal.
Violet was fiercely determined to make her own way and always worked even after her retirement. Her love of history was evident and her many family connections to the history in Blanco County were profound. She also loved just plain "visiting". She never met a stranger. Violet loved to dance and rarely missed a Sunday dance over the years with her friends at Ed's in Round Mountain or, later, in Johnson City. Though she was a child of the depression and frugal like most of that era, Violet was exceedingly generous when she came across someone in need. She was a "regular" on the list of local women who would contribute food for various occasions.
Violet and Ruby Waters, with Linda, became a trio of ranching women until Linda and Brett married and carried on the tradition. She took great delight though, in the fact that her black calves always brought more money than their red ones. On the occasions when they traded cattle within the family, her keen eye made the trade come out in her favor most of the time no matter the color or breed.
Violet grew up in the Walnut Creek Methodist Church, which her ancestors helped found in the mid-1800s. She later became a member of the First Baptist Church in Johnson City. She served on numerous boards and organizations over the years.
The love of her life walked in her door, the summer of 2008 and from then on there wasn't anything more important to her than her only grandchild, Amber.
Violet's love of all things Avon still survives in our memories as the Avon bags of goodies for every occasion have yet to be exhausted.
Violet is survived by her daughter Linda, son-in-law Brett, and granddaughter Amber Bray, her sisters Hazel and Alice, and numerous relatives.
